On 06/11/2001, the BBC One reality series Faking It aired the episode “Burgerman to Chef,” featuring Gordon Ramsay mentoring Ed Devlin, a 30-year-old burger van proprietor from Newcastle. The program followed Devlin over four weeks as he attempted to transform from street food vendor into a credible head chef capable of convincing a panel of industry professionals. The episode formed part of Faking It’s established format, which challenged participants to adopt a completely different profession within a limited time frame before being judged by experts. During the training period, Devlin worked in high-pressure professional kitchens under Ramsay’s guidance. He also trained with chef David Laris at the London restaurant Mezzo, where he practiced knife skills, plating, and timing associated with haute cuisine. The program documented Devlin learning to prepare refined dishes, including seared red mullet and chocolate fondant, while adapting to the pace and discipline of fine dining service. Ramsay’s role focused on pushing Devlin to meet professional standards and preparing him for a final evaluation. The episode concluded with a competitive cook-off in which Devlin presented dishes to a panel of judges who were unaware of his background. Despite early difficulties and describing the experience as “like hell,” Devlin succeeded in convincing the judges he was a legitimate head chef. The 06/11/2001 broadcast became an early television appearance for Ramsay in a mentoring role, predating several of his later standalone series.
