Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, refers to the coordinated attacks against Jews in Germany. Triggered by the assassination of a German diplomat by a Jewish teenager, the Nazis seized the opportunity to incite violence across the country. Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues were looted, vandalized, and set on fire. Thousands of Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps.
The aftermath of Kristallnacht was devastating. Around 91 Jews lost their lives during the attacks, and tens of thousands were detained. The violence marked a significant escalation in the Nazi regime's anti-Semitic policies and persecution of Jews. It also signified a turning point in the Holocaust, foreshadowing the atrocities that would follow.
The international community condemned the events of Kristallnacht, but for many Jews, it became a stark realization of the danger they faced in Nazi Germany. The attacks left a lasting impact on Jewish communities, instilling fear and uncertainty about their future in the country.
