On 26/05/1910, Second Lieutenant George S. Patton Jr. married Beatrice Banning Ayer at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts. Patton, then serving with the 15th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, had met Beatrice through social connections in Massachusetts. The ceremony took place in the coastal community of Beverly Farms on Boston’s North Shore, attended by family members and prominent figures connected to the Ayer family.
Beatrice Banning Ayer was the daughter of Frederick Ayer, an industrialist associated with the American Woolen Company, and part of a well known Boston area family. The marriage linked Patton, a recent graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, with one of New England’s established industrial families. Following their wedding, the couple began married life while Patton continued his early cavalry service, remaining assigned to the 15th Cavalry before later transferring to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment at Fort Myer, Virginia, in late 1911.
