Cyprus begins its role as President of the Council of the European Union on 1 January 2026, assuming the rotating leadership position that places it at the center of European Union decision-making for a six-month term. This role assigns Cyprus responsibility for chairing meetings of the Council, setting legislative priorities, and ensuring continuity in the work of the European Union across policy areas.
As President of the Council of the European Union, Cyprus coordinates discussions among EU member states and represents the Council in negotiations with other EU institutions, including the European Parliament and the European Commission. The presidency operates within the EU’s rotating system, under which each member state holds the role for six months. In 2026, Cyprus presides over a Council representing 27 member states, managing legislative files that span economic governance, internal market regulation, migration, digital policy, and external relations.
The start of the Cypriot presidency reflects the country’s ongoing participation in shared European governance since joining the European Union in 2004. Over the course of its term, Cyprus is responsible for organizing and leading hundreds of formal and informal meetings, facilitating compromises between member states, and maintaining the efficiency of the EU’s legislative process during its presidency period.
