Fidel Castro, along with a group of around 160 rebels, attempted to overthrow the government by attacking the Moncada army barracks in Santiago de Cuba. The attack was aimed at seizing weapons to start a revolution against the then-President Fulgencio Batista.
The assault, though meticulously planned, ultimately failed. The rebels faced strong opposition from the government forces, leading to many casualties on both sides. Castro and his brother Raul were captured, tried, and sentenced to prison.
Despite its failure, the attack on the Moncada barracks marked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. It propelled Fidel Castro to the forefront of the anti-Batista movement and garnered support for his cause. The failed attack also shed light on the deep-rooted issues of corruption and inequality in Cuba, fueling the push for societal change.
The events at the Moncada barracks served as a catalyst for the Cuban Revolution, which ultimately succeeded in toppling the Batista regime and establishing a new government under Castro's leadership.
