On 29/08/2009, Cristiano Ronaldo made his official La Liga debut for Real Madrid during the club’s opening match of the 2009–10 Spanish league season against Deportivo La Coruña at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. The match marked the beginning of Ronaldo’s competitive career in Spain following his world-record transfer from Manchester United earlier that summer.
Ronaldo scored his first official goal for Real Madrid during the match, converting a penalty in the 35th minute. The opportunity came after veteran captain Raúl was fouled inside the penalty area by Deportivo goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia. Ronaldo stepped forward confidently and struck the penalty into the net to register his first competitive goal for the club in front of the Bernabéu crowd.
Real Madrid ultimately won the match 3–2 in an entertaining season opener. In addition to Ronaldo’s penalty, goals from Raúl and Lassana Diarra secured victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Deportivo remained competitive throughout the match, but Madrid successfully held their advantage to begin the season with three points.
The fixture attracted enormous international attention because it featured the debuts of several major signings assembled by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez during the club’s high-profile rebuilding project. Alongside Ronaldo, new arrivals Kaká, Karim Benzema, and Xabi Alonso all appeared in the starting lineup. The summer transfer campaign became known as part of Real Madrid’s renewed “Galácticos” era, with Ronaldo’s arrival serving as its centerpiece.
During his debut season, Ronaldo wore the number 9 shirt because club legend Raúl González still held the iconic number 7 jersey. Ronaldo would later inherit the number 7 shirt after Raúl’s departure in 2010, further strengthening the global identity of the “CR7” brand associated with his career.
The atmosphere surrounding Ronaldo’s debut reflected the extraordinary expectations placed upon him after his transfer from Manchester United for a then world-record fee of approximately £80 million. Supporters and media viewed him as the player expected to restore Real Madrid’s dominance both domestically and in European competition following several disappointing Champions League campaigns.
Ronaldo adapted quickly to Spanish football and immediately established himself as Real Madrid’s central attacking figure. Despite suffering injuries during parts of his first season, he finished the 2009–10 campaign with 33 goals in all competitions. Over the following years, he would go on to become Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer and help the club win multiple Champions League and La Liga titles.
The goal against Deportivo La Coruña marked the beginning of one of the most successful player-club partnerships in modern football history.
