Released on 09/11/2015, Ronaldo became the first fully authorized documentary film dedicated to the life and career of Cristiano Ronaldo. Directed by British filmmaker Anthony Wonke and executive-produced by the production team behind acclaimed sports and music documentaries such as Senna and Amy, the film provided unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to one of football’s most globally recognized athletes during the peak years of his career at Real Madrid.
The documentary was filmed over approximately 14 months and followed Ronaldo through both his professional and personal life. The production team received extensive access to his daily routines, including filming inside his Madrid home and during visits to his birthplace of Madeira, Portugal. The project sought to present a more personal portrait of Ronaldo beyond his public image as an elite footballer and commercial icon.
Much of the documentary centered on Ronaldo’s 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons with Real Madrid. A major narrative focus was the club’s pursuit of “La Décima,” Real Madrid’s long-awaited tenth European Cup title, which they won in May 2014 after defeating Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. The film also documented Ronaldo’s preparation for and reaction to winning his second Ballon d'Or award in January 2014, highlighting the pressure and expectations surrounding his career during that period.
Alongside football achievements, Ronaldo explored several deeply personal themes. A significant portion of the film focused on Ronaldo’s relationship with his eldest son, Cristiano Jr., showing moments of family life rarely visible to the public at the time. Interviews with his mother Dolores Aveiro, his brother Hugo, and longtime agent Jorge Mendes provided additional insight into his upbringing, ambitions, and personality.
The documentary also addressed more difficult aspects of Ronaldo’s life, including reflections on his father José Dinis Aveiro’s struggle with alcoholism and his death in 2005. Ronaldo spoke candidly about the emotional impact of losing his father before achieving many of his greatest football successes. The film portrayed how global fame and intense public attention could create personal isolation despite extraordinary professional accomplishment.
The production included references to Ronaldo’s rivalry with Lionel Messi, which had become one of the defining narratives in modern football. While Messi himself did not appear extensively, the film acknowledged the competitive dynamic between the two players during their years dominating world football awards and scoring records.
Critics and audiences noted that the documentary attempted to humanize Ronaldo by balancing scenes of luxury and celebrity with moments of vulnerability, discipline, and family responsibility. Released while Ronaldo was still actively competing at the highest level, the film differed from many traditional sports documentaries that focus retrospectively on retired athletes.
Ronaldo was distributed internationally through cinemas and digital platforms and became one of the most widely viewed football documentaries of its era.
