On 12/06/2004, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first senior international goal for Portugal during the opening match of UEFA Euro 2004 against Greece. The game took place at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto and marked the beginning of Ronaldo’s first major international tournament as a teenage player representing his country on home soil. Ronaldo, then 19 years old, started the match on the bench before entering as a second-half substitute. In stoppage time, he scored with a header from a corner delivered by Deco, reducing Greece’s lead late in the match. Despite the goal, Portugal suffered a surprising 2–1 defeat to a Greek side that would eventually go on to win the tournament in one of football’s most unexpected championship runs. Although the result disappointed Portuguese supporters, Ronaldo’s performance offered an early glimpse of the talent and confidence that would later define his international career. The tournament became a breakthrough moment for him globally, as he quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young players in European football. Throughout Euro 2004, Ronaldo played an increasingly important role in Portugal’s attack under manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. He finished the tournament with two goals and two assists. In addition to his goal against Greece, he scored a crucial header during Portugal’s 2–1 semi-final victory over the Netherlands, helping the host nation reach the final for the first time since Euro 2000. Portugal ultimately reached the final at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on 04/07/2004, where they faced Greece once again. However, Greece defeated Portugal 1–0 to claim the European Championship title, leaving the Portuguese squad and supporters devastated after entering the tournament as favorites on home soil. Despite the painful ending, Ronaldo’s performances earned him a place in the UEFA Team of the Tournament, confirming his emergence as a major international talent. Euro 2004 became the foundation for what would evolve into one of the most extraordinary international careers in football history. At the time of the tournament, Ronaldo had recently completed his first season at Manchester United after joining the English club from Sporting CP in 2003. His displays at Euro 2004 further accelerated his rise in world football and increased global attention surrounding his future potential. Over the following two decades, Ronaldo became Portugal’s captain, all-time leading scorer, and most-capped player. He later helped Portugal win UEFA Euro 2016 and the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 while breaking numerous international scoring and appearance records. As of May 2026, Ronaldo remained the all-time leading men’s international goalscorer and one of the most decorated players in football history. Earlier that month, he scored his 100th Saudi Pro League goal for Al Nassr, continuing his scoring career more than 22 years after his first international strike for Portugal. #CristianoRonaldo #Portugal #Euro2004 #InternationalFootball #CR7 #FootballHistory #UEFAEuro
