Juventus secured their ninth consecutive Serie A championship on 26/07/2020 after defeating Sampdoria 2–0 at Allianz Stadium in Turin. The victory confirmed the club’s 36th Italian league title overall and extended its record for the most successive league championships in one of Europe’s top five football leagues. With two matches still remaining in the 2019–20 season, Juventus mathematically guaranteed first place ahead of rivals Inter Milan.
Cristiano Ronaldo played a decisive role in the title-clinching match by scoring the opening goal late in the first half. The Portuguese forward struck from a free kick routine during stoppage time before halftime, recording his 31st Serie A goal of the season. Federico Bernardeschi added a second goal in the second half to secure the victory and officially confirm the championship. The result ensured Juventus remained at the top of Italian football despite strong competition from Inter Milan and Atalanta during the campaign.
The title marked the first and only Serie A championship won under manager Maurizio Sarri, who had been appointed before the 2019–20 season following successful periods with Napoli and Chelsea. At the time, Sarri became the oldest manager to win the Serie A title. However, despite securing the league crown, Juventus’ season was later viewed as transitional because the club failed to win the UEFA Champions League, and Sarri departed shortly afterward.
Ronaldo’s performances throughout the campaign were among the most important factors behind Juventus retaining the title. He finished the season with 31 league goals, becoming the first Juventus player in more than six decades to score over 30 goals in a single Serie A season. His scoring consistency helped Juventus navigate a difficult campaign that was interrupted for several months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced Italian football to suspend competition in early 2020 before resuming under strict health protocols.
The final Serie A standings reflected the competitiveness of the season. Juventus concluded the campaign with 83 points, finishing only one point ahead of second-placed Inter Milan. Although Juventus maintained its domestic dominance, the narrow margin indicated growing pressure from rival clubs after years of relative control over Italian football.
The 2019–20 title also represented another milestone in Juventus’ historic period of domestic success that began in the 2011–12 season. Across those nine consecutive championships, the club transformed into Italy’s dominant football power, featuring key players such as Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Paulo Dybala, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
