On 13/01/2014, Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d'Or during the annual gala ceremony held in Zurich, Switzerland. The award ended a four-year run of dominance by Lionel Messi, who had won the honor consecutively from 2009 through 2012. For Ronaldo, it marked the second Ballon d'Or of his career after first winning the award in 2008 during his time at Manchester United, and it was his first Ballon d'Or as a Real Madrid player.
The ceremony became one of the most emotional moments of Ronaldo’s career. While accepting the trophy on stage, he was visibly overcome with emotion and shed tears during his speech. His young son, Cristiano Jr., joined him during the presentation, creating one of the most widely circulated images from the event. Ronaldo thanked teammates, coaches, family members, and supporters while acknowledging the significance of returning to the top of world football after several years finishing behind Messi in the voting.
According to the official FIFA voting results, Ronaldo won with 1,365 points. Lionel Messi finished second with 1,205 points, while Bayern Munich and France winger Franck Ribéry placed third with 1,127 points. Ribéry’s inclusion in the final three had generated considerable debate because he had helped Bayern Munich win the UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, and German Cup during 2013.
The voting process surrounding the award became controversial after FIFA extended the original voting deadline from 15/11/2013 to 29/11/2013. The extension occurred shortly after Ronaldo delivered a remarkable performance in Portugal’s FIFA World Cup playoff against Sweden, scoring a decisive hat-trick in the second leg to secure Portugal’s qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Some observers questioned whether the extension influenced the final outcome, although FIFA stated that the deadline had been moved because of low initial response rates from eligible voters.
Ronaldo’s victory was largely driven by his extraordinary individual statistics during the 2013 calendar year. Despite Real Madrid not winning a major team trophy that year, Ronaldo scored 69 goals for club and country combined, the highest total among elite European footballers. His performances included prolific scoring in La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and international competition with Portugal.
The award represented a major turning point in Ronaldo’s Real Madrid career. Since joining the club in 2009, he had consistently produced exceptional scoring numbers but had repeatedly finished behind Messi in Ballon d'Or voting. Winning the 2013 award re-established him as the world’s top individual player and began a new period of Ballon d'Or success during Real Madrid’s dominant era in Europe.
Only months later, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win “La Décima,” the club’s long-awaited tenth European Cup title, beginning one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.
