Negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan towards a comprehensive peace treaty are ongoing but complex, despite having initialed a framework agreement in Washington in August 2025. This landmark agreement, which includes a commitment to normalize diplomatic relations and a US-led plan for a major transit corridor (TRIPP) through Armenian territory, was seen as a significant breakthrough. However, several critical and contentious issues continue to impede the final signing. Key among these are the process of border delimitation and Azerbaijan's demand that Armenia amend its constitution, which currently contains references to the 1990 Declaration of Independence that Baku views as a territorial claim. While commissions from both sides continue to meet to discuss technical and organizational matters for border marking, the overall peace process remains fragile. The focus has shifted toward bilateral dialogue, moving away from previous Russian and European mediation efforts, though the engagement of the United States remains a crucial element in maintaining momentum toward a final, ratified agreement
