In 2011, Aung San Suu Kyi served as Guest Director of the Brighton Festival, an annual multi-arts event held in Brighton. The appointment, announced in February 2011, followed her release from house arrest in November 2010 and marked her first major international cultural role after years of political isolation. As Guest Director, she became the third individual to take on the position, following Anish Kapoor in 2009 and Brian Eno in 2010.
Although Suu Kyi was unable to travel to the United Kingdom due to the political situation in Myanmar at the time, she contributed remotely to the festival’s direction. She provided a recorded message and set the central theme, “Use your liberty to promote ours,” which was incorporated into the festival’s programming. The Brighton Festival, typically held throughout May, features a wide range of artistic disciplines including theatre, music, dance, and visual arts, drawing participants and audiences from across the world.
Under her guest directorship, the 2011 festival included works and events that reflected themes of freedom of expression and human rights. Organizers integrated her message into various aspects of the program, facilitating discussions and artistic presentations aligned with those ideas. Her involvement brought additional international attention to the festival during a period when Myanmar was beginning limited political reforms and re-engagement with the global community.
The collaboration demonstrated how cultural platforms can be used to connect artistic expression with global issues. While Suu Kyi did not attend in person, her role shaped the festival’s thematic focus and contributed to its international profile during that year.
