Birth of Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi was born on 19/06/1945 in Yangon, then known as Rangoon, during the final years of British colonial rule in Burma. She was born into a politically significant family at a time when the country was moving toward independence from Britain. Her father, Aung San, was a leading figure in Burma’s independence movement and is widely recognized for negotiating the country’s independence from British rule. The name “Aung San Suu Kyi” reflects her family lineage. “Aung San” comes from her father, “Suu” from her paternal grandmother, and “Kyi” from her mother.
