In 1965, Arnold Schwarzenegger completed his mandatory military service in the Austrian Army at age 18, serving as a tank driver. During his one year obligation, he operated an M47 Patton tank, a 50 ton armored vehicle used by Austria’s armed forces during that period. Conscription was required for Austrian males, and Schwarzenegger entered service shortly after turning 18. While stationed in the army, Schwarzenegger continued training in bodybuilding whenever possible. During his service, he briefly left his base without permission to compete in the Junior Mr. Europe bodybuilding contest, which he won. He was later required to spend time in military detention for the absence, after which his commanding officers allowed him additional time to train. The experience helped him continue progressing in bodybuilding while fulfilling military duties. Schwarzenegger completed his service later in 1965, after which he resumed full time training and competition. The period in the Austrian Army preceded his move to Munich, Germany, and eventually to the United States in 1968, where he continued building his bodybuilding career.
