On 03/07/1985, the fantasy adventure film Red Sonja, starring Brigitte Nielsen and featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released in theaters across the United States. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the film was inspired by characters from the sword and sorcery stories connected to Robert E. Howard’s fictional universe. Although Schwarzenegger received top billing in marketing materials, he appeared in a supporting role as Lord Kalidor, a warrior who assists Sonja on her quest. The film follows Red Sonja, portrayed by Brigitte Nielsen, as she seeks revenge after her family is killed and a powerful talisman is stolen by Queen Gedren, played by Sandahl Bergman. Schwarzenegger’s character, Lord Kalidor, joins Sonja during portions of her journey, helping her confront enemies and recover the talisman. Despite his prominent billing, Kalidor is absent for extended portions of the film, with the narrative primarily centered on Sonja’s storyline. Red Sonja was released during a period when Schwarzenegger was already known for roles in Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984). The film was marketed partly on that association, though the character of Kalidor was distinct from Conan. The production included large scale sets, sword combat sequences, and fantasy themed visual effects typical of mid 1980s sword and sorcery films.
