In 1966, Arnold Schwarzenegger won the title of “Best Built Man of Europe” at a bodybuilding competition held in Germany. The award, sometimes referred to as “Best-Built Athlete of Europe,” recognized overall physique, symmetry, and muscular development, and was one of several regional titles that contributed to Schwarzenegger’s early rise in European bodybuilding circuits.
At the time, Schwarzenegger was in his late teens and competing regularly across Austria and Germany following his service in the Austrian Army. The 1966 victory added to his growing list of titles and helped increase his visibility among European bodybuilding organizations and promoters. It also contributed to his qualification and preparation for larger international competitions, including the NABBA Mr. Universe contests he would soon enter.
The recognition in Germany came during a period when Schwarzenegger was actively building his reputation outside Austria, training in Munich and competing internationally. The title marked a step forward in his progression from regional competitor to international contender, setting the stage for his move to London for the 1967 and 1968 Mr. Universe competitions and, ultimately, his relocation to the United States in 1968.
