On 05/10/2011, Apple Inc. announced that Steve Jobs, co founder and former chief executive officer, had died at the age of 56. Jobs passed away due to complications related to pancreatic cancer. His death occurred six weeks after he resigned as CEO of Apple on 24/08/2011, when he handed leadership to Tim Cook. Jobs had co founded Apple in 1976 and played a central role in the development of products including the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
Apple confirmed his death in a statement, noting that Jobs’ vision and leadership shaped the company’s products and direction. The company’s website replaced its homepage with a black and white portrait of Jobs and a message acknowledging his passing. Tim Cook said Apple had lost a visionary and creative genius, and that the company would continue the work Jobs loved. Tributes followed from technology leaders, government officials, and users worldwide.
Jobs’ resignation in August 2011 followed a series of medical leaves related to his health. He remained chairman of Apple’s board after stepping down as CEO. His passing on 05/10/2011 came one day after Apple introduced the iPhone 4S at an event in Cupertino. The announcement marked the end of Jobs’ leadership era at Apple after more than three decades of involvement with the company.
