On 05/06/2017, Apple Inc. announced the HomePod during its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote in San Jose, California. The device was introduced as a wireless smart speaker designed for music playback and home audio, integrating Apple Music and Siri voice control. Apple presented the HomePod as featuring a high excursion woofer, an array of seven beamforming tweeters, and spatial awareness technology that automatically adjusts sound based on room acoustics. The company also highlighted support for voice commands through Siri for music playback, smart home control, reminders, and general information queries. Apple announced an initial price of $349 in the United States and said the HomePod would be available in White and Space Gray. The company originally scheduled release for December 2017 in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. In November 2017, Apple stated that the launch would be delayed to early 2018 to allow additional development time. The HomePod ultimately began shipping on 09/02/2018 in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, with pre orders opening in January 2018. The HomePod announcement marked Apple’s entry into the smart speaker market, joining existing voice controlled speakers introduced by other technology companies. Apple emphasized audio quality, deep integration with Apple Music, and HomeKit compatibility for smart home control. The device also supported AirPlay for wireless audio streaming from Apple devices and multi room audio functionality in later software updates.
