On 12/03/2011, one day after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern Japan, Apple Inc. launched a donation campaign through its iTunes Store to support humanitarian relief efforts coordinated by the American Red Cross. The initiative appeared as a dedicated donation page within iTunes, allowing users to contribute directly using the credit card already associated with their iTunes accounts. The campaign was introduced during the immediate response period following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake on 11/03/2011 and the subsequent tsunami that caused widespread destruction across Japan’s Tōhoku region.
Customers using the iTunes Store could select fixed contribution amounts ranging from $5 to $200. Apple stated that 100 percent of the funds collected would be transferred directly to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Donations were processed through users’ existing iTunes billing information, enabling quick contributions without requiring additional registration. The listing accompanying the campaign explained that funds would support shelter, food, and emergency assistance for those affected by the earthquake and tsunami, and that Apple would not retain any portion of the donations. The system followed a similar donation model Apple had previously used for the 2010 Haiti earthquake relief efforts.
The iTunes-based fundraising drive was accessible across desktop iTunes and iOS devices and remained part of broader digital fundraising efforts launched by technology companies during the early response phase. Reports noted that the donation mechanism allowed registered iTunes users to contribute with a single click, with Apple waiving its usual transaction share so the entire amount reached the Red Cross. The initiative formed part of corporate responses in the days immediately after the disaster, when emergency aid organizations were mobilizing international financial support.
