On 27/07/2016, Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook announced that the company had sold its one billionth iPhone during an employee meeting at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. Cook told employees that the milestone had actually been surpassed the previous week and used the gathering to formally recognize the achievement. The announcement came nine years after the original iPhone launched on 29/06/2007, marking the growth of the product into Apple’s primary revenue driver.
Cook described the iPhone as one of the most important and successful products in Apple’s history and credited employees and customers for the milestone. The announcement coincided with Apple’s quarterly earnings period, which reported a year over year decline of about 15 percent in iPhone sales for that quarter. Despite the slowdown, cumulative shipments reached one billion units. Apple had previously reported selling its 500 millionth iPhone in March 2014, meaning the next 500 million units were sold in just over two years.
The one billion unit milestone reflected the iPhone’s expansion across multiple generations and global markets. Since its introduction, Apple had released successive models including the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and later variants, contributing to cumulative sales growth. The 27/07/2016 announcement highlighted the scale of iPhone adoption less than a decade after its launch.
