On 13/01/2021, Apple Inc. announced a major expansion of its Racial Equity and Justice Initiative, introducing new programs aimed at addressing barriers to opportunity for communities of color. The initiative built on Apple’s earlier $100 million commitment announced in June 2020. Apple stated that the expanded effort would focus on education, economic empowerment, and criminal justice reform through partnerships and new institutional investments in the United States.
Apple announced plans to launch a Global HBCU Creativity and Innovation Hub, designed to support collaboration among historically Black colleges and universities. The company said the hub would connect students and faculty across multiple campuses, providing resources in areas such as coding, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Apple also introduced the Apple Developer Academy in Detroit, Michigan, which would offer training in app development, coding, project management, and design. The program was created in partnership with Michigan State University and targeted students from the Detroit area.
The expansion also included the establishment of the Propel Center, described as a new learning and innovation hub for historically Black colleges and universities. Apple said it would work with partners to support both virtual and physical learning opportunities across participating institutions. In addition, Apple announced funding for venture capital and small business support, including investments intended to increase access to capital for minority owned businesses. These projects were part of the broader REJI framework focused on education, workforce development, and economic opportunity.
Apple stated that the January 2021 expansion represented the next phase of the initiative launched in June 2020. The company said the programs would roll out over time and involve collaboration with educational institutions, community organizations, and industry partners.
