On September 22, 2025, Andorra formally recognized the State of Palestine during a UN General Assembly summit hosted by France and Saudi Arabia. Foreign Minister Imma Tor announced the decision, aligning the tiny Pyrenean principality with France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, and others, raising the total number of recognizing UN member states to 157.
Andorra framed its move as support for a two-state solution featuring a demilitarized Palestinian state free from Hamas control and living securely alongside Israel. The recognition responds to the ongoing Gaza war, which has killed over 65,000 Palestinians since October 2023.
Palestinian officials welcomed the step as further international legitimation, while Israel condemned it as rewarding terrorism and undermining hostage negotiations. For neutral, tourism-dependent Andorra, the decision marks a rare entry into high-stakes geopolitics, reinforcing European momentum toward Palestinian statehood and pressing remaining holdouts, including the United States, to reconsider their positions
