The 3rd Academy Awards took place on November 5, 1930, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, honoring films released between August 1, 1929, and July 31, 1930. Organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the ceremony recognized achievements during a transitional period in Hollywood, as the film industry rapidly shifted from silent cinema to synchronized sound productions.
The awards ceremony was a private dinner event attended by approximately 200 guests. Unlike later televised broadcasts, the event was not broadcast live; winners were announced to the press afterward. The most prominent honor of the evening, Outstanding Production (now known as Best Picture), went to All Quiet on the Western Front, produced by Universal Pictures. The film, directed by Lewis Milestone, also earned Milestone the award for Best Director. Adapted from the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the film depicted the experiences of German soldiers during World War I and was one of the early large-scale sound productions.
Other notable winners included Norma Shearer, who received the Best Actress award for her performance in The Divorcee, and George Arliss, who won Best Actor for portraying British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in Disraeli. The ceremony also introduced distinctions between comedy and drama performances, though this practice was later discontinued in subsequent years.
The 3rd Academy Awards reflected a period of adjustment within the industry as studios and filmmakers adapted to sound technology, which had gained widespread adoption following the success of talking pictures in the late 1920s. The event also marked the first time that a film entirely produced with synchronized sound won the top award. Over time, the Academy would expand categories and establish the globally televised format now associated with the Oscars.
