In 893 CE (280 AH), al Hadi ila'l Haqq Yahya arrived in Yemen after being invited by tribal leaders from the northern highlands to mediate ongoing internal disputes. His arrival marked the first known entry of a Zaydi Imam into Yemen and introduced a religious and political movement that would later become deeply rooted in the region’s history. Although this first mission did not immediately succeed, it laid the groundwork for the later establishment of the Zaydi Imamate.
Yahya ibn al Husayn, later known as al Hadi ila'l Haqq Yahya, was born in Medina around 859 CE. He was a descendant of Hasan ibn Ali through the prominent scholar al Qasim al Rassi, making him part of the Prophet Muhammad’s family lineage. Known for his scholarship, legal knowledge, and religious leadership, Yahya gained recognition among followers of Zaydi Shi'a Islam. During the late 9th century, tribal groups in northern Yemen sought outside mediation to address prolonged rivalries and instability among competing clans.
Responding to these invitations, Yahya traveled from Medina to Yemen in 893 CE. However, upon arriving in the highland regions, he encountered difficulties in securing lasting tribal cooperation. Historical sources indicate that divisions among local groups and inconsistent support weakened his ability to establish stable authority during this first visit. Facing resistance and political uncertainty, Yahya eventually departed Yemen and returned to Medina.
Despite the unsuccessful outcome of the initial mission, the relationship between Yahya and the Yemeni highland tribes continued. Several years later, tribal leaders renewed their appeals for his leadership. In 897 CE (284 AH), Yahya returned to Yemen and settled in Sa'da, where he formally established the Zaydi Imamate. This institution would continue, in various forms, for centuries and become one of the defining political and religious systems in northern Yemen.
Historical Significance
The 893 arrival of al Hadi ila'l Haqq Yahya represented the beginning of direct Zaydi religious leadership in Yemen. Although the first attempt at mediation did not produce immediate political unity, it established connections between the Zaydi movement and northern Yemeni tribes that later shaped the country’s religious and political development.
