Italian forces advanced into Egypt following their successful re-capture of Fort Capuzzo, located just inside Libya. This strategic move allowed the Italian colonial troops to cross the border into Egyptian territory. Upon entering Egypt, the Italians quickly seized control of the small port of Sollum. The British response to this invasion was minimal, as the only resistance encountered was from a light British screening force. This force chose to withdraw rather than engage in a confrontation, allowing the Italians to continue their advance with little opposition. The operation marked a significant expansion of Italian military presence in North Africa, reflecting the broader context of World War II where territorial gains were crucial for both Axis and Allied powers. The Italian advance into Egypt was part of a larger campaign aimed at securing control over North African territories, which were vital for resources and strategic positioning in the Mediterranean region.
