On 26/12/1772, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera seria Lucio Silla premiered at the Teatro Regio Ducale in Milan. Mozart was 16 years old and had traveled to Italy with his father, Leopold Mozart, to fulfill a commission for the Milan carnival season. The libretto by Giovanni de Gamerra, revised by Pietro Metastasio, tells a political drama centered on the Roman dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla and themes of power, clemency, and loyalty. Mozart supervised rehearsals and worked closely with the singers, adapting arias to suit their vocal abilities.
The production required large scale orchestral and vocal forces typical of opera seria. Mozart wrote elaborate arias, accompanied recitatives, and extended ensembles, including a prominent final chorus. The premiere faced practical challenges, including delays due to illness among performers, but the opera ultimately opened at the end of December and received multiple performances during the carnival season. The Milan audience included members of the aristocracy and court officials, and the opera remained in the repertory for several weeks.
The premiere of Lucio Silla formed part of Mozart’s third Italian journey, which concluded in March 1773 when he returned to Salzburg. The Milan production demonstrated his ability to compose a full length opera seria for a major Italian theater. The event on 26 December 1772 therefore marked one of the largest theatrical works of Mozart’s early career.
