On 06/09/1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague as part of celebrations surrounding the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia. The commission came from the Bohemian Estates for festivities linked to the coronation ceremonies held in Prague. The opera seria, set to a libretto adapted by Caterino Mazzolà from an earlier text by Pietro Metastasio, was prepared under tight time constraints. Mozart arrived in Prague in late August 1791 and completed the score rapidly, with portions believed to have been written in the final days before the performance.
Contemporary accounts describe the work as composed in an unusually short period, often cited as about eighteen days, while Mozart was simultaneously involved with preparations for Die Zauberflöte in Vienna and already engaged with the commission that later became the Requiem in D minor. The premiere took place at the Estates Theatre with a cast assembled for the coronation festivities. The reception among members of the imperial court was reportedly mixed. A comment attributed to Empress Maria Luisa of Spain, wife of Leopold II, described the opera as “una porcheria tedesca” (“German rubbish”), a remark frequently cited in later sources, although documentation of the exact wording varies.
Despite the initial reactions, La clemenza di Tito remained in performance in Prague shortly after the premiere and later gained wider acceptance. In the decades following Mozart’s death on 05/12/1791, the opera entered the repertory in several European cities and became one of his frequently staged serious operas. The Prague premiere on 06 September occurred during the final months of Mozart’s life, between his summer travels and the Vienna premieres of Die Zauberflöte on 30/09/1791 and Eine kleine Freimaurer-Kantate in November.
