Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed his Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, in Vienna. The autograph score bears this date, and the work was premiered the following day, 11/02/1785, at a subscription concert where Mozart performed as soloist. Contemporary accounts note that copyists were still preparing orchestral parts shortly before the performance, and Mozart is believed to have played from memory, a practice he used in several of his Vienna concert appearances.
The concerto is notable for being one of only two piano concertos Mozart composed in a minor key, the other being Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491. Scored for a larger orchestra than many earlier concertos, K. 466 includes trumpets and timpani, contributing to a darker orchestral color. The opening movement begins with a tense orchestral introduction in D minor, followed by a dramatic solo entrance. The Romanze second movement shifts to B-flat major before a contrasting minor section interrupts the calm texture. The final movement returns to D minor, later resolving into D major at the conclusion.
Composed during Mozart’s most active period of Vienna subscription concerts between 1784 and 1786, the concerto reflects an expansion of symphonic scale within the piano concerto form. The orchestral writing plays a more independent role, and the tonal contrast between minor and major sections shapes the overall structure. The premiere on 11 February 1785 formed part of a concert series in which Mozart introduced several new piano concertos for performance with his own participation as soloist.
Why This Moment Matters
The completion on 10/02/1785 and immediate premiere on 11/02/1785 placed K. 466 among Mozart’s Vienna concertos that expanded orchestral scale and minor key expression within the piano concerto format.
