On 28/05/1787, Leopold Mozart, violinist, composer, and father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, died in Salzburg at the age of 67. Leopold had served for decades as a musician and later deputy Kapellmeister in the Salzburg court, and he played a central role in directing Wolfgang’s early education and career. From childhood, Wolfgang traveled extensively across Europe under his father’s supervision, performing in courts and cities including Munich, Paris, London, and Vienna. Leopold documented many of these journeys in correspondence and oversaw Wolfgang’s early compositions and public appearances.
By the early 1780s, the relationship between father and son had become strained after Wolfgang moved permanently to Vienna in 1781 and pursued an independent career. Leopold remained in Salzburg and frequently expressed concern in letters about Wolfgang’s finances, professional choices, and marriage to Constanze Weber in 1782. Their correspondence from the mid 1780s reflects a mixture of continued affection and disagreement, particularly regarding Wolfgang’s distance from Salzburg and reliance on freelance income. Leopold’s death in May 1787 occurred while Wolfgang was living in Vienna and working on Don Giovanni, which would premiere in Prague later that year.
Leopold Mozart’s death removed a long standing personal and professional influence in Wolfgang’s life. Although they had not lived in the same city for several years, the surviving letters show continued communication up to the mid 1780s. The event took place months before the Prague premiere of Don Giovanni on 29/10/1787 and during a period of transition in Mozart’s career.
Why This Moment Matters
The death on 28/05/1787 ended the life of Wolfgang’s primary early mentor and correspondent, concluding a relationship that shaped his childhood training and continued to influence his adult decisions.
