On 02/08/2011, Israel Post officially released the “Wikimania 2011 – Haifa, Israel” commemorative stamp, becoming the first postage stamp in history connected to Wikimedia and Wikipedia. The special issue was launched shortly before the start of Wikimania 2011, the annual international conference of the Wikimedia movement.
The commemorative release was timed to coincide with the 7th Wikimania conference, which took place from 04/08/2011 to 07/08/2011 at the Auditorium Complex in Haifa, Israel. Israel Post also produced a special First Day Envelope to accompany the stamp issue, a traditional philatelic practice used to mark important cultural and historical events.
Wikimania 2011 brought together approximately 1,000 Wikipedia editors, Wikimedia contributors, developers, researchers, and open-knowledge advocates from 54 countries. Participants attended presentations, workshops, technical discussions, and community meetings focused on the future of Wikipedia, free knowledge projects, collaborative editing systems, education initiatives, and Wikimedia technology development.
The Haifa conference represented an important international gathering for the Wikimedia movement during a period of rapid global growth. By 2011, Wikipedia had already become one of the world’s most visited websites, operating in hundreds of languages with millions of articles maintained by volunteer communities worldwide.
The host city of Haifa was also marking its 250th anniversary during the same year, adding additional symbolic significance to the event. Organizers highlighted Haifa’s multicultural identity and academic institutions as part of the conference’s broader emphasis on international collaboration and knowledge sharing.
The release of the Wikimedia-related stamp reflected growing institutional recognition of Wikipedia and the broader Wikimedia movement. Traditionally, postage stamps commemorate nationally or culturally significant subjects, including scientific achievements, historical figures, and international events. The issuance of the Wikimania stamp demonstrated how collaborative online knowledge projects had begun receiving formal cultural acknowledgment beyond the digital world.
Why This Moment Matters :
The Wikimania 2011 stamp marked one of the earliest examples of Wikimedia receiving official recognition through a national postal system. It symbolized the growing cultural legitimacy of collaborative online knowledge communities and highlighted Wikipedia’s expanding global influence by the early 2010s.
