On 01/03/2002, Larry Sanger officially resigned from his roles as editor-in-chief of Nupedia and chief organizer of Wikipedia, ending his formal paid involvement with both projects. The resignation marked a major transition in the early history of Wikipedia, which had been launched only a little over a year earlier and was already expanding rapidly through volunteer contributions.
Larry Sanger had worked alongside Jimmy Wales during the creation of Nupedia, a peer-reviewed online encyclopedia funded by Bomis, the web portal company co-founded by Wales. Nupedia launched in 2000 with a highly structured editorial review process involving subject experts and academic oversight. However, the slow pace of article production led Sanger and Wales to explore alternative collaborative models.
In January 2001, Wikipedia was introduced as a complementary side project to Nupedia using wiki software that allowed open public editing. Wikipedia quickly grew far faster than Nupedia, attracting volunteers who could instantly create and modify articles without waiting for formal academic review. Sanger became one of the project’s main organizers during its formative period, coordinating editorial discussions, policy development, and community management.
By early 2002, financial support from Bomis had declined following broader downturns in the internet economy after the dot-com crash. Without continued funding for his position, Sanger resigned from both Nupedia and Wikipedia on 1 March 2002. His departure effectively ended Wikipedia’s phase as a company-supported project with paid editorial leadership and accelerated its transition into a fully community-driven volunteer platform.
After Sanger’s resignation, Jimmy Wales remained publicly associated with Wikipedia’s leadership while the growing editor community increasingly shaped policies, governance structures, and editorial standards collectively. Over time, Wikipedia evolved into a decentralized project operated through volunteer collaboration rather than centralized editorial management.
Sanger later remained publicly connected to Wikipedia’s history and frequently discussed the encyclopedia’s development, governance, neutrality policies, and reliability debates. He also went on to participate in other online knowledge and educational projects in subsequent years.
The resignation occurred during a critical growth period for Wikipedia. In 2002, the encyclopedia was rapidly expanding in both article count and international language editions, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world’s largest collaborative knowledge projects.
Why This Moment Matters :
Larry Sanger’s resignation marked the transition of Wikipedia from a small company-supported experiment into a large-scale volunteer-driven community project. The shift helped establish the decentralized governance model that would later define Wikipedia’s editorial culture and long-term development.
