Release of Wikipedia Version 0.5

In April 2007, the Wikimedia Foundation officially released Wikipedia Version 0.5, an offline CD-ROM edition containing 1,964 carefully selected articles from the English-language Wikipedia. The project was developed as a test release by the Wikipedia Version 1.0 Editorial Team and represented one of Wikipedia’s earliest major efforts to distribute encyclopedia content beyond the internet. Wikipedia Version 0.5 was created to provide access to free knowledge for people without reliable internet connections. During the mid-2000s, broadband internet access remained limited or expensive in many parts of the world, and offline editions were viewed as an important way to expand educational access to Wikipedia’s growing content base. The project was developed in collaboration with Linterweb, a French software company that designed the offline browser and search engine used to navigate the encyclopedia. The release allowed users to install and browse Wikipedia locally from a CD-ROM without requiring an active internet connection. Unlike the constantly changing live encyclopedia, Version 0.5 contained a manually curated selection of articles chosen under strict editorial guidelines established by the Wikipedia Version 1.0 Editorial Team. Articles were evaluated based on quality, completeness, sourcing, stability, and global importance. The collection covered a broad range of subjects including science, geography, mathematics, history, literature, philosophy, technology, politics, and culture. The release included entries for all sovereign countries, world capital cities, known chemical elements, and many of Wikipedia’s highest-rated “featured articles.” Organizers described the collection as covering topics ranging “from Art to Zeus,” emphasizing the encyclopedia’s broad thematic scope despite the relatively compact article count. Wikipedia Version 0.5 was distributed commercially on CD-ROM for approximately €12, or about US$15 at the time. In addition to physical discs, downloadable ISO images and torrent files were made available online to support broader access and community sharing. The release became an important early milestone in Wikimedia’s offline distribution efforts. It laid the groundwork for larger offline projects including Wikipedia Version 0.7, Version 0.8, and later ZIM-based archives distributed through Kiwix software. These later systems eventually enabled compressed offline versions containing millions of articles for use in schools, libraries, and low-connectivity regions worldwide. Why This Moment Matters: Wikipedia Version 0.5 demonstrated how collaborative online knowledge projects could be adapted for offline educational access long before widespread global broadband connectivity. The project also helped establish the technical and editorial foundations for future portable Wikipedia distributions used around the world.
