On 30 March 2000, Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson was formally knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London, having been named in the 1999 New Year Honours list for services to entrepreneurship. The honour recognised his contribution to British business through the development of the Virgin Group, including the growth of Virgin Atlantic since its launch in 1984. The knighthood acknowledged Branson's wider achievements as an entrepreneur across industries including aviation, music and travel. For Virgin Atlantic, the occasion was a notable moment in the history of our founder, whose approach to business and customer service had played a central role in establishing the airline as a competitor in the international aviation market. Following the investiture, Branson became formally known as Sir Richard Branson. The honour recognised his contribution to entrepreneurship beyond any single Virgin business, while also reflecting the public profile he had developed through the Virgin brand.
