In 2007, we launched Change Is in the Air, our sustainability programme designed to address the environmental and social impacts of our operations. The initiative brought together our environmental responsibilities and community investment activities under a coordinated strategy, with a particular focus on reducing carbon emissions from flying. It established a framework for setting measurable objectives, monitoring progress and involving teams across the business in improving our environmental performance.
A central part of the programme was our commitment to improving aircraft fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. We set a target to reduce carbon emissions per passenger and cargo kilometre flown by 30% between 2007 and 2020. Alongside this, the programme addressed operational efficiency, energy consumption, waste reduction, responsible purchasing and engagement with the communities we served. It also encouraged collaboration with industry partners to explore longer-term solutions to aviation's environmental challenges.
The launch reflected our recognition that air travel brings economic and social benefits while also contributing to climate change. Change Is in the Air gave us a more structured approach to managing these responsibilities, with carbon reduction as our principal environmental priority and regular sustainability reporting used to assess our progress.
