In 1989, we introduced individual Sony Video Walkman devices for passengers travelling in Upper Class, giving them greater control over their entertainment during long-haul flights. The portable video players allowed customers to watch programmes and films on their own screens rather than relying solely on the entertainment shown on shared cabin monitors. The introduction reflected our efforts to improve the onboard experience through practical changes to passenger comfort and service. Personal video entertainment was still relatively uncommon in commercial aviation, and providing portable devices offered Upper Class customers more flexibility in how they spent their time during a flight. The Sony Video Walkman became one of Virgin Atlantic's early Upper Class service features, demonstrating how personal technology could be incorporated into long-haul air travel before individual seatback entertainment systems became widespread.
