United Nations promotes International Year of Moderation for sustainable peace and understanding.

The United Nations International Year of Moderation 2019 (IYM2019) was officially observed throughout 2019 following the adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution in December 2017. The initiative sought to promote moderation through dialogue, tolerance, understanding, and cooperation at a time when many countries and international organizations were addressing concerns related to extremism, social polarization, and radicalization. On 07/12/2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/72/129, formally proclaiming 2019 as the International Year of Moderation. The proposal was introduced by Malaysia and received support from UN member states. The resolution defined moderation as an approach that could contribute to peaceful coexistence and encouraged governments, international organizations, civil society groups, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to participate in activities related to the observance. Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak described the initiative as an effort to counter extremism and radicalism through the adoption of moderation. According to the resolution, the International Year of Moderation aimed to amplify moderate voices and encourage greater international cooperation through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding. The resolution also invited the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations to facilitate the observance in collaboration with relevant organizations. However, unlike other UN international years observed in 2019, including the International Year of Indigenous Languages and the International Year of the Periodic Table, the International Year of Moderation developed only a limited public presence. Observers noted the absence of a coordinated international campaign and relatively low visibility across official websites and social media platforms. Several circumstances may have contributed to the initiative's lower profile. In Malaysia, political changes following the 2018 general election affected some of the organizations associated with the moderation agenda. The Global Movement of Moderates Foundation, which had previously promoted moderation initiatives, was closed in 2018. In addition, the UN resolution specified that all activities connected with the observance should be financed through voluntary contributions rather than through the regular United Nations budget. Although the International Year of Moderation received less public attention than some other international observances in 2019, its stated objectives reflected broader United Nations efforts to encourage peaceful dialogue among communities and nations. The themes highlighted in the resolution also overlapped with discussions in education, intercultural relations, conflict prevention, and community engagement. Why This Moment Matters: The International Year of Moderation illustrates how United Nations international observances can depend heavily on the commitment of member states, partner organizations, and financial support. The experience of IYM2019 demonstrates that official recognition alone does not necessarily guarantee widespread public engagement.
