The United Nations General Assembly officially adopted Resolution 3336, which extended the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) until 30 June 1978. Established by the United Nations in 1949, UNRWA was intended to provide relief and support services to Palestinian refugees displaced during the Arab-Israeli conflict. The agency's activities largely include education, healthcare, relief and social services, camp infrastructure, and improvement.
Prior to the adoption of Resolution 3336, UNRWA's operations were scheduled to cease, potentially leaving millions of Palestinian refugees without essential services. The General Assembly's decision to prolong UNRWA's mandate reflected the ongoing humanitarian need and highlighted the lack of a durable solution for the refugee situation.
The resolution had a direct impact on Palestinian communities residing in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. UNRWA's continued operations meant sustained access to primary education for refugee children, healthcare services, food aid, and general economic support. According to UNRWA's reports, they were aiding approximately 1.4 million Palestinian refugees at that time.
Statistics show that UNRWA served 32,000 refugees with round-the-clock healthcare services and managed over 700 schools providing education to half a million children. The extension of the mandate helped stabilize these essential services in the midst of ongoing regional conflicts and socio-political challenges.
Adopting Resolution 3336 was a reflection of the international community's recognition of the protracted nature of the Palestinian refugee issue. It acknowledged the importance of continued support while implicitly underscoring the need for a comprehensive peace settlement.
