Transport & Environment conducted a ranking of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) regarding their readiness to transition to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2030. In this assessment, Toyota was identified as the least prepared automaker. The report highlighted that Toyota had not established a clear target for BEV production by 2030 and indicated that the company planned to produce only 10% of its vehicles as BEVs by 2025. This strategy suggested a continued reliance on hybrid technologies, which are often criticized for their environmental impact compared to fully electric vehicles. The ranking raised concerns about Toyota's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and adapting to the growing demand for sustainable transportation options. Following this assessment, Toyota announced plans to develop 30 battery-electric models by 2030, with an ambitious goal of selling 3.5 million BEVs annually. Additionally, the company stated that its luxury brand, Lexus, would also participate in this transition, indicating a shift in strategy to align with market trends and regulatory pressures for cleaner vehicles. This pivot reflects the increasing urgency for automakers to innovate and invest in electric vehicle technology to meet consumer expectations and environmental standards.
