Lord Fatafehi Fakafānua has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Tonga, marking a significant shift in the kingdom’s political leadership. On 15 December 2025, Tonga’s Legislative Assembly voted in favour of Fakafānua, defeating the incumbent Prime Minister Dr. ‘Aisake Eke by 16 votes to 10 in a secret ballot among the 26 members of parliament. Fakafānua, a noble and long‑serving Speaker of the Assembly, becomes the second noble to be elected Prime Minister since democratic reforms in 2010 and the youngest person to hold the country’s top government post. After his parliamentary victory, he was formally appointed to office by King Tupou VI on 18 December 2025, in accordance with the Tongan constitution. His election underscores ongoing debates in Tonga about the balance between traditional noble influence and democratic representation in governance.
Following his appointment, Prime Minister Fakafānua moved quickly to form his new Cabinet, announcing an 11‑member team that includes both experienced politicians and figures from outside parliament. His government has retained Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence, and appointed Dr Viliami Latu as his Deputy Prime Minister, reflecting a blend of continuity and new leadership. The selection of ministers was approved by King Tupou VI, and the cabinet lineup was made public in early January 2026. Fakafānua has emphasised his commitment to national unity, stability, and effective governance as he leads Tonga through this new chapter.
