Chenggong, a prominent military leader, aimed to capture Nanjing during his campaign from 1656 to 1658. His strategy involved encircling the city, which he successfully executed on 24 August 1659. This maneuver was part of a broader effort to assert control over the region and challenge the Qing dynasty's authority. However, the Qing forces responded with reinforcements that significantly outnumbered Chenggong's troops. The arrival of these reinforcements proved decisive, leading to a confrontation that ultimately broke Chenggong's siege and forced his army to retreat to Xiamen. This retreat marked a setback for Chenggong, who had hoped to leverage the unrest caused by the Guo Huaiyi rebellion to gain support and resources.
