Rafic Hariri, a prominent business tycoon and the then-Prime Minister of Lebanon, was a pivotal figure in the nation’s post-civil war reconstruction. His role in rebuilding Beirut and his focus on economic reforms earned him both admiration and enemies within the complex political landscape of Lebanon.
On the specified day, Hariri was traveling in a motorcade near the St. George Hotel in Beirut when a massive explosion detonated. The blast killed Hariri along with 21 others and injured over 200 people. The magnitude of this attack sent shockwaves through Lebanon and the international community, with immediate suspicions directed towards Syrian involvement, given Hariri's growing opposition to Syria's significant political and military influence in Lebanon.
Historically, Syria had maintained a strong foothold in Lebanon since the Lebanese Civil War, stationing thousands of troops under the pretext of maintaining peace but also exerting substantial political control. Before his assassination, Hariri had been a vocal critic of the Syrian presence in Lebanon and was actively pushing for its withdrawal based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559, which called for the disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias and the withdrawal of foreign troops.
The assassination catalyzed a series of events now referred to as the Cedar Revolution, a nationwide wave of protests demanding the end of Syrian occupation. Pressure from within Lebanon, coupled with mounting international scrutiny, led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops within months—a presence that had lasted nearly three decades.
This moment had a lasting impact on the regional political dynamics. It placed Hezbollah's role and influence in Lebanon under the microscope and triggered a re-evaluation of foreign influence in Lebanese politics. Several investigations, including the United Nations International Independent Investigation Commission and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, were established to uncover the truth behind Hariri's assassination.
Hariri’s death and the subsequent withdrawal of Syrian forces marked a critical juncture in Lebanon's modern history, symbolizing the powerful intersection of local aspirations and international diplomacy.
