In the mid-19th century, the British colonial administration in Sri Lanka imposed a series of taxes on the local population. These measures included a road tax, which required labor or payment from every household, and a heavy duty on essential goods. The peasants, already struggling under the weight of economic hardship, found these levies intolerable.
Led by figures such as the Buddhist monk Gongalegoda Banda and local leaders like Puran Appu, the local population organized a revolt that came to be known as the Matale Rebellion. The rebel leaders symbolized the resistance against the colonial government's oppressive taxation policies. The movement rapidly gained support, attracting both rural peasants and urban unemployed who sought an end to the financial burdens imposed by the British authorities.
The insurrection began in the region of Matale before spreading to other parts of the Kandy district. The rebels attacked government buildings, destroyed official records, and attempted to seize control from colonial authorities. However, the British administration responded with severe force. Military reinforcements were sent to the affected areas, and martial law was declared.
Despite the widespread support for the rebellion, it was ultimately suppressed. The leaders were captured, and subsequent trials led to executions and imprisonments. The British administration took stringent measures to prevent future uprisings by increasing their military presence and employing divide-and-rule tactics among the local population.
The Matale Rebellion highlighted the local populace's deep dissatisfaction with colonial rule and its economic policies. While it was crushed swiftly, it remained a critical episode that exposed the vulnerabilities and struggles of the agrarian society under British colonialism.
