On 15/07/1975, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) began with the launch of two spacecraft from the United States and the Soviet Union, marking the first multinational crewed mission in space. The Soviet Soyuz 19 spacecraft launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at 12:20 UTC, followed approximately 7.5 hours later by the American Apollo spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center at 19:50 UTC. The mission brought together astronauts and cosmonauts from two nations that had previously competed during the Space Race. The Apollo crew consisted of Thomas P. Stafford, Vance D. Brand, and Donald K. “Deke” Slayton, while the Soyuz 19 crew included Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov. The primary objective of the mission was to test docking compatibility between the two spacecraft systems and to conduct joint scientific and engineering experiments. On 17/07/1975, the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft successfully docked in orbit above the Atlantic Ocean. Following the docking, commanders Stafford and Leonov opened the hatch between the spacecraft and exchanged a handshake, marking the first direct meeting between American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts in space. The crews conducted joint activities, including experiments and technical demonstrations, over the course of their time connected in orbit. The mission demonstrated that spacecraft from different countries could rendezvous and dock in space, establishing procedures that would later be used in international collaborations such as the Shuttle-Mir program and the International Space Station. It also showed the feasibility of standardized docking systems and cooperative mission planning between different space agencies.
