On October 28, 2017, Rwanda made history by inaugurating the Gahanga Cricket Stadium, the country's first international-standard cricket facility. Located in Gahanga, a suburb of Kigali, the stadium represented a major milestone for cricket development in Rwanda, a country still recovering from the scars of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The stadium was built through the "Cricket Builds Hope" initiative, a UK-based charity founded by Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation (RCSF). The facility's design stood out with its three iconic, shell-shaped pavilions made from local materials, symbolizing unity and resilience.
The opening ceremony was a festive occasion, attended by cricket enthusiasts, local dignitaries, and international guests, including Michael Vaughan, a former England cricket captain. The stadium was seen as more than just a sports facility—it became a symbol of how cricket could contribute to rebuilding communities and promoting social cohesion in Rwanda.
With its establishment, Gahanga Cricket Stadium became the home of Rwandan cricket, hosting both local and international matches, while also offering youth development programs to inspire future generations.
