Opening of the Gahanga Cricket Stadium in 2017

On October 28, 2017, Rwanda made history by inaugurating the Gahanga Cricket Stadium, the country's first international-standard cricket facility. Located in Gahanga, a suburb of Kigali, the stadium represented a major milestone for cricket development in Rwanda, a country still recovering from the scars of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The stadium was built through the "Cricket Builds Hope" initiative, a UK-based charity founded by Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation (RCSF). The facility's design stood out with its three iconic, shell-shaped pavilions made from local materials, symbolizing unity and resilience. The opening ceremony was a festive occasion, attended by cricket enthusiasts, local dignitaries, and international guests, including Michael Vaughan, a former England cricket captain. The stadium was seen as more than just a sports facility—it became a symbol of how cricket could contribute to rebuilding communities and promoting social cohesion in Rwanda.
