In 1974, the National Ballet of Rwanda was established by President Habyarimana, marking a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of Rwandan cultural heritage. This esteemed dance group showcases the rich traditions of Rwandan music and dance, performing both nationally and internationally. The ballet features the umushagiriro, a captivating cow dance performed by women, and the intore, known as the dance of heroes, performed by men. Additionally, the performances are complemented by the rhythmic drumming on ingoma drums, traditionally played by men. The establishment of the National Ballet has not only provided a platform for talented dancers but has also played a crucial role in fostering national pride and cultural identity. Through its performances, the ballet educates audiences about Rwandan traditions and values, ensuring that these cultural expressions are passed down to future generations. The National Ballet of Rwanda continues to be a beacon of Rwandan culture, celebrating the country's artistic heritage and contributing to its cultural diplomacy on the global stage.
