After the Roman general Lucullus faced setbacks in his campaign against Mithridates, Pompey was appointed to take command of the Roman forces in the East. His campaign against Mithridates began with a series of strategic maneuvers that ultimately led to a decisive victory in battle. This victory not only defeated Mithridates but also compelled Tigranes, the king of Armenia, to submit to Roman authority. Following his defeat, Mithridates fled to Crimea, where he was later betrayed and killed by his own son, Pharnaces. Pompey's actions in this campaign were pivotal in consolidating Roman power in the region, as he remained in the East to pacify and stabilize the territories that had been conquered. His efforts extended Roman control further south to Judaea, marking a significant expansion of Roman influence in the Eastern Mediterranean.
