Carthage faced a critical situation in its military campaign in Sicily due to a blockade imposed by Roman commander Gaius Lutatius Catulus. The blockade effectively cut off supply lines to the Carthaginian forces stationed in Sicily, leading to severe shortages of essential resources. In an attempt to relieve the situation, Carthage dispatched a rescue fleet; however, this fleet was decisively defeated by Catulus, further exacerbating the supply crisis. As the situation deteriorated, Carthage found itself unable to sustain its military presence in Sicily and was compelled to seek peace with Rome. The terms of the peace agreement were harsh, requiring Carthage to pay an immediate fine of 1,000 talents of silver, followed by an additional 2,200 talents over a period of ten years. Furthermore, the agreement mandated the evacuation of all Carthaginian forces from Sicily, marking a significant territorial loss for Carthage.
