On 08/11/1894, Robert Frost achieved his first professional literary milestone when his poem “My Butterfly: An Elegy” appeared on the front page of The Independent, a New York newspaper and literary journal. The publication marked Frost’s first paid acceptance by a national outlet. He received $15 for the poem, a modest sum that nevertheless represented his first earnings from poetry and confirmed that his writing could reach a wider audience beyond school publications and local circulation. The publication came two years after Frost graduated from Lawrence High School in Massachusetts and during a period when he was working various jobs while continuing to write. Encouraged by the acceptance and payment, Frost had printed copies of the poem as a small pamphlet. Around the same time, he proposed marriage to Elinor Miriam White, his former co valedictorian and longtime acquaintance. Although she initially declined, choosing to continue her education, the event marked an early intersection between Frost’s developing literary career and his personal life. Frost and White later married on 19/12/1895.
