Willem Janszoon, a Dutch navigator, embarked on a voyage from the East Indies aboard the ship Duyfken, which was part of the Dutch East India Company. This expedition marked a pivotal moment in maritime exploration as Janszoon became the first recorded European to land on Australian soil. His journey took him to the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, where he meticulously charted approximately 300 kilometers of coastline. This mapping effort was significant as it laid the groundwork for future exploration and navigation in the region. Following Janszoon's initial landing, more than thirty subsequent Dutch expeditions were launched, further expanding the knowledge of Australia's northern territories. These expeditions contributed to the European understanding of the continent's geography and resources, influencing trade routes and colonial interests in the years to come.
