On 15/09/1984, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, was born Henry Charles Albert David at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. He was the second son of Charles, Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, and Diana, Princess of Wales.
Prince Harry was born at 4:20 p.m. weighing approximately 6 pounds 14 ounces. His birth was officially announced by Buckingham Palace shortly afterward, and celebratory gun salutes were fired in London to mark the arrival of the new royal baby. At the time of his birth, he became third in line to the British throne behind his father and older brother, Prince William.
The choice of St Mary’s Hospital followed a modern royal tradition established with Prince William’s birth in 1982. Earlier generations of royal children had often been born inside royal residences, but Diana chose the hospital setting for both of her sons. The Lindo Wing later became internationally associated with royal births because of its connection to the family.
Prince Harry was christened on 21/12/1984 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie. His full name honored several members of the royal family, while “Harry” quickly became the name by which he was publicly known throughout his childhood and adult life.
His early years were spent between Kensington Palace in London and Highgrove House in Gloucestershire alongside Prince William. During childhood, Prince Harry became one of the most photographed royal children of the 1980s and 1990s as public interest in Charles and Diana’s family grew internationally.
Over the following decades, Prince Harry served in the British Army, carried out royal duties around the world, and became associated with charitable causes involving veterans, mental health, and humanitarian work through organizations including Sentebale and the Invictus Games Foundation.
Why This Moment Matters
Prince Harry’s birth introduced a new generation of the British royal family during a period of enormous international attention surrounding Charles and Diana. His life would later become closely connected to major developments in the modern monarchy, military service, charitable work, and public discussions surrounding media and royal life.
